Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People using these medications must be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Experts suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

People who have come off the jabs describe a intense return of appetite.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.

The struggle is compounded if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
