The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Unveil a Latest Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The anticipation surrounding the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio clarified that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This phrasing suggests that the team could be crafting a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it pioneered the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, branching plots, and deep class systems—qualities that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs you can achieve if you're playing as a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also famously permissive, allowing players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be approached in a variety of manners, sometimes in surprising fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can look forward to another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
