TikTok Grants The Community Control to Limit AI-Generated Media in Their Feeds

TikTok is introducing a updated setting that allows them to cut down on the volume of AI-created videos appearing in their timelines. This initiative comes as the service revealed that it currently hosts more than 1 bn content made with AI.

Pilot Phase and Launch

This change is being tested over the next few weeks before a full-scale release. This shift aligns with a surge in content created by AI, driven by emerging content generation software.

AI Proliferation Online

It has been noted that almost a tenth of the quickest rising content creators on another major platform primarily display clips produced artificially. A considerable share of this output is considered “AI slop”, a term for poor-quality, bulk-generated content that is often illogical or dreamlike.

Based on user feedback that a lot of users appreciate content produced via AI tools, including digital art to educational videos, and we intend to provide users the ability to see more or less of that, depending on their own choices,” stated a platform representative.

Volume and Proportions

The platform disclosed that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its app tagged as made with AI. Overall, over 100 mn pieces of content are added to the platform each day, making AI-generated material a relatively small part of its overall inventory.

User Control Features

Users will be able to reduce or increase the volume of AI content they view by accessing the topic control option in the application and picking the AI content topic. Further subjects that currently be controlled under the filter cover politics, style, cosmetics, and choreography.

Platform Guidelines

Its policies oblige content makers to tag lifelike AI-generated content, and it prohibits harmful deepfakes of celebrities or crisis events. Any authentic-looking AI-generated clip that is not labeled can be taken down under its community policies.

Additionally, the service will now apply an artificially created tag to content created with its own AI tools, or identified by an industry-wide initiative for recognizing content made by AI. This action is designed to deter users from trying to evade the tagging system.

Responsible AI Funding

TikTok is additionally establishing a $2 million awareness program for specialists and groups to create learning resources about ethical AI use. This initiative will support non-profit groups dedicated to training computer science.

Platform Protection

TikTok has defended its safety measures, during controversy over proposals to cut jobs for numerous safety staff in Britain. TikTok is planning to reduce a significant number of roles in its user protection department in its British office, with labor groups and online safety experts raising concerns that people are being substituted by machine-led review.

A senior executive clarified that people-led review would continue to be important, but AI can shield workers by filtering out the most harmful content ahead of it is viewed by humans. The platform reported a significant reduction in disturbing and violent content seen by human moderators over the previous year due to the use of its AI tools.

“We think that it’s essential to integrate people and machines to keep the platform safe,” she said. “We’ll have humans as part of that process, but we further consider it’s highly necessary to limit contact with harmful content as quickly as possible, which is where a extensive automated help is making a difference operate efficiently.”
